I think I may have identified the problem that Ukip have with Racism – it’s simply that they have no idea what the word means. They are quite fond of accusing those who call their supporters and members out as being racists or bigots, of being ignorant as to its meaning but I would argue that they themselves seem to be.
So just for Ukip here is how the UN defines Racial Discrimination
” The term “racial discrimination” shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.”
But that’s mostly not what you practice, you practice what society has accepted as racism and sociologists describe as implicit or averse racism:
“Implicit racism, in contrast, includes nonconscious biases, expectations, or tendencies that exist within an individual, regardless of ill-will or any self-aware prejudices the person may or may not hold”
This is where Ukip collectively scream – “sociologists lefty nonsense” and “Political Correctness running wild”
The problem with implicit racism is that it is those likely to say “I’m not racist but” or “my friends are Black/Asian/Muslim” who practice it, without realising they are doing so. Janice Atkinson is a classic example of someone who will deny to her back teeth she is racist, but attributing characteristics to a person based on the their perceived ethnicity is racism. This is exactly what Janice did “ting tong from somewhere”, referring to a rather unpleasant character from Little Britain (and no Ukip I did not complain to the BBC as the programme was making fun of the implicit racists out there just like you!)
The defence of Janice has been sad to see and has of course completely missed the point
This from foxy is a typical example ..
And the defence continues. Thomas Evans, Ukip member prolific tweeter and someone who loves to comment on news articles, used the “restaurant” defence, when commenting on this article.
Racism in any form, wether implicit or explicit, is unacceptable. It is not PC to expect society to treat individuals as equals. I am quite sure that Janice would not have said that “Ting Tong from somewhere” about a white middle aged woman married to a white middle aged man. That, being the case, would suggest rather strongly that Janice was being racist as well as just plain rude. Since her uttering of those words she has been arrogant and rather unapologetic. This is the kind of racism that insidiously undermines society. It is the sort of racism that those practicing it think does not exist and those who are on the receiving end feel is ignored.
That Ukip have resorted to attacking the victim says a lot about the sincerity of Nigel’s apology ( obviously for Ukip the apology was on the basis that you then shut up and leave the party alone )
Finally an example of what is not racist from the always amusing Marty Caine.
I said this
And Marty interjected with
No wonder Ukip have a problem if this is what they understand by racism!
One quick PS…
As I was finishing this blog I notice this from Suzanne Evans an elected representative of this country who I am sure has constituents who are Muslim. You see Suzanne it isn’t funny it’s just rather pathetic / sad and yet again an example of the implicit racism so prevalent in Ukip.
