This is a tweet from Janice Atkinson
Nigel Farage has also been on about FGM. So have Ukip adopted a little mentioned problem that needs greater exposure or are they shamelessly jumping on the anti muslim band wagon.
Let’s get the Muslim thing out of the way first, FGM is predominantly a problem of Africa and within Africa a problem of countries in the East. Some of which have very high levels of FGM and are majority christian. To make it a Muslim only problem, is to ignore all the victims. If you want to learn about FGM don’t go to Ukip but try any of these 16 organisations. I personally have donated to Forward, for all the work they do with African women.
Janice claims that ukip were the first party to have a policy to ban FGM. I find it hard to believe that Ukip have a policy that predates the Female Genital Mutilation Act of 2003, but if they do I am sure they will be prepared to back up Janice’s lies.
I always find it odd that Ukip would vote against measure to protect children and women because it’s the EU. That is exactly what they did when the resolution was to tackle FGM. In feb 2006 the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling on member states to work together take a zero-tolerance approach on all forms of violence against women. It also asked all EU countries to recognise rape within marriage as a criminal offence and not to accept cultural practices as an excuse for honour crimes or female genital mutilation. In fact Parliament asked member states to ban female genital mutilation and to prosecute all perpetrators of it.
Not one Ukip MEP supported the resolution and UKIP MEPs who voted, voted against included Gerard Batten and Nigel Farage.
Janice’s excuse for Ukip voting against FGM
Only this was not about creating new laws, this was about sharing our best practice across Europe, to help as many young people as possible. Ukip seem to care more about the EU than protecting the vulnerable.
Far from being the first to declare a need to help prevent FGM and help the victims, it seems Ukip were the last.
Meanwhile it is obvious that all the agencies involved in dealing with the problem of FGM need to do more and this was made clear in this report, set of guidelines, produced by the the government.
So more should be done but political posturing by Ukip is exactly that. It neither helps to prevent abuse nor does it help us find solutions to the problems. Ukip are opportunistic ambulance chasers, this is not the first time they have jumped on the backs of people’s pain to get a foot hold in politics and it will not be the last.
