Stop making assumptions!

I am constantly being told by those who follow ukip, edl, Britain first that I know nothing about Islam, that I am ignorant to the harm that those who think they are Muslims can do. This is my repost to them, and to those who can not understand why Israel built a wall. A wall I do not agree with, a wall I hate, but a wall that for many represents a temporary piece of mind.

In 1995 I was living in Israel with my Ghanian partner, an illegal immigrant tolerated by the Isrealies because they needed a cheap labour force and could no longer use Palestineans. I had gone to Israel in 1992 at a time of great hope. A hope that was destroyed a few years later by a young Israeli fanatic, Yigal Amir, who on the 4th November assassinated Yitzhak Rabin at a Peace Rally. I was at that rally, I was idealistic a member of Peace Now, hopeful that negotiations might lead somewhere.

The assination gave those Palestineans who did not want peace the opportunity they wanted. In order to get a right wing Likud government elected, that would abandon the peace process that they hated, they set out to bomb the country into fear.

There were many suicide bombs, everyone knew someone who was killed maimed or who had lost a loved one or a friend. A good friend of mine lost her daughter killed by a bomb in Dizengeoff. I was lucky, I took the bus everday, I looked at my fellow passengers, I got nervous looking at young men with coats on. I stepped in a shoe shop on Rehov Hamelekh George and haggled over a pair of brown shoes, if I had carried on walking I would have been here when the bomb went off.

Everyday my partner went off to work in Ramat Gan, he caught the number 20 Bus that goes past the Diamond Exchange. On the 24th July 1996 he went off to work, he was wearing Jeans and black boots, I was at home a day off. When the news came through on the TV of a bus bombing I started to ring ( Nokia bricks – everyone in Israel had one ). I rang continuously all day, but as always when there was a tragedy the mobile system was overloaded. On the news, Israeli news carries live pictures and holds back nothing, I saw a leg and I became convinced that the one leg was my partners. Suffice to say it was not, but I can still summon up the visceral fear I felt at the time and the anger I felt when he came home smiling and carrying a bottle of wine, oblivious to the fear I had lived with all day.

I loved my time in Israel, I love the people on both sides of the wall. I am not an apologist for violence carried out in the name of Islam or by the state of Israel.  But neither will I allow whole communities of ordinary people be maligned because of their religion or their governments – we all know where that has led us.

Next time some kipper tells me I know nothing  I will point them here and remind them that making assumptions is never a good idea.

Press Release: Is UKIP imploding – and why does it blame us?

This is the text of a press release from women defy ukip

Is UKIP imploding – and why does it blame us?

We have recently been on the receiving end of a massive trolling attack on our Facebook page Women Against Ukip. We are not quite clear what precipitated this. Post election, we have been chugging along quite quietly, a little uncertain of where we should go from here. It was a far cry from the manic weeks leading up to the election when we were collecting hundreds of likes every day.

Some very recent posts seem suddenly to have started a concentrated attack on the page, although they are not very different from what we have been doing all the time. One was a cartoon manufactured out of a press photo which highlighted the differences between Farage and Carswell. Another – which does seem to have been a definite trigger – highlighted ukip’s disastrous finances – one ukipper comment in response, received yesterday ran thus:

What a bunch of pricks you all R the women on here look like pIgs in knickers. And the rest look like they need a fkn face plant what a bunch of ugly women all Together.

This is fairly typical of what we have had to put up with since our inception, but we have tried to allow free speech on the page. This abuse makes it very hard. We come from a wide range of ages and political views, and it is not pleasant to be addressed as traitors, communists, witches , pigs, etc.

We also put up posts about the Austerity March, and about the Gay Pride March. Suddenly, over the last two or three days, we were inundated with trolls, many making threatening and offensive remarks of the type you see above. Some appear to be fake or cloned accounts. We had no option but to ban people doing this. Some pretend to be women but , from their general tone, we are pretty certain are no such thing.

You would think that Facebook would protect us – instead, it allows organisations like Britain First to continue. It was us who were threatened with removal. All the admins had to log in from our personal accounts and all were encouraged to unpublish the page. We all refused. It does seem to me that it is high time that some enterprising journalist took a look at just what organisation is running Facebook. It appears to condone extreme right-wing views, deeming that these organisations and trolls have not infringed what they call community standards, while anyone opposing them is frequently treated in this way. FB does not allow us to respond, and never investigates if these accounts are genuine.

We asked ourselves two main questions. Was this an organised trolling attack or was it just ukippers and Britain First jumping on the bandwagon? So I put up that I was preparing a press release, so that national papers would know what was going on. It abruptly stopped. One comment went up just saying ‘Press release?’ to which I replied that yes, from time to time I sent these off. We have had no trolling since. Someone appears to have told them to stop. I have to say that this is frankly more alarming than if it was not organised.

But we also wondered why this had happened. We now have some contacts within ukip and with disenchanted ukippers. From what I can gather, UKIP is frightened of us, but blames us for their failure to make an impact. One can only deduce that ukip is imploding, and in doing so, is looking around for someone to blame.

We are what we say we are on the page – just a group of women who met on social media and, in a moment of madness, thought we, as women, would stand up against ukip. Over 21,000 likes on, we appear, despite ourselves, to have become a major force in the fight against ukip. But we do not have the resources to find out exactly what is happening within the party. You do. We hope you will take up the baton.

The ukip challenge

I challenge ukip, are you as good as your word? Do you really not tolerate racism and ignorance?

Mr Steve Latham, ukip member, candidate for you in numerous elections has put a post on his Facebook page that amounts to an accusation that non white children are resulting in Genocide.

When he was confronted by the express and star ..

Asked how he could compare European integration to ‘genocide’ – defined as the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group – he said: “The English person will eventually be mixed race.”

Now I don’t expect a court summons from The Hague anytime soon for the Genocide of white Europeans. What I do expect is this:
Mr Latham currently has 661 followers on Twitter, many of them identifiable as ukip accounts. Following him, I presume, because you share his views. Do you still share his views?

Let’s see how many of you are still following tomorrow.

Since I wrote this the Guardian has reported that his employers have sacked him, his long will it take UKIP to revoke his membership?

The truth about ukip and the TTIP

On the 28th May the Trade Committee at the EU discussed TTIP and an amendment proposed by a Labour MEP, Jude Kirton – Darling, was adopted with some minor changes. The position adopted favours the use of public courts instead of any investor-state dispute settlement mechanism ( the idea of a three person tribunal held in private ) This means no ISDS in TTIP.

The context of all the amendments discussed at the meeting can be found here. They include amendments covering the transparency of negotiations, the access of SMEs, protection of the highest EU standards on the environment or workers rights. One example of many many amendments – over 200 in all is this on agriculture:

The roll call of how members of the committee voted on these amendments can be found here. The vast majority voted for the amendments to go forward. With all the claims being made by UKIP you would assume that they would vote for amendments that would protect the NHS, Agriculture, The environment, Workers rights. However it seems Lord Dartmouth chose to abstain. But then this is the man that in 2014 stated he wanted the NHS included in any agreement

There will be a trade agreement between the EU and the USA. Those who represent us at the EU must engage with the process not by being negative or obstructive. But by tabling amendments and taking part in realistic discussions that will make a difference and protect us all against an unbalanced trade agreement. Ukip seem willing to use it as way to create negativity about the EU whilst ignoring that the EU itself, through the work of MEPs such as Jade Kirton – Darling, is working to make it an agreement that benefits as many as possible.

Ukip have demonstrated again, this afternoon, that they are willing to lie by omission.

This is what Bill Etheridge said:

Note he suggests that British Labour voted against the debate, whilst in reality all the Labour MEPs voted for the debate.

Labour, Green and Lib Dem MEPs are working to create a TTIP agreement that will work for the people of the EU. Ukip are using it to claim the EU does not work without offering any alternative to this agreement. Ukip want a Free Trade Agreement, it’s what they stand for as Libertarians, they just don’t want the EU to negotiate it.

Hey Ukip when is Sainsburys not Sainsburys

Steven Woolfe and his band of merry kippers have been demonstrating their ability to create amusement over the last few days. With a campaign to boycott one of the country’s biggest retailers,

Lord Sainsbury has been touted as being one of those masterminding the campaign to remain in Europe. Cue Steven Woolfe and the hashtag #boycottsainsburys and #shameonyouSainsburys.

Apart from encouraging abuse of some minimum wage workers in the Sainsbury call centre, it’s also incorrect. The only excuse Steven can have is he reads headlines but is too cheap to pay for full access to The Times. He was told that their was an issue with his claim but he, as usual, chose arrogantly to ignore.

Here he is claiming Sainsbury have succumbed to Ukip pressure, without realising, as a company, it was never supporting the Yes campaign financially. If Mr Woolfe is the moderate future of ukip those of us who defy ukip can rest easy.

Of course lets not forget those acolytes who follow the every word of the ukip leadership ..

Finally don’t forget if you shop at Sainsburys or if you are one the biggest philanthropists in this country – you are a traitor!
